Speaking of castles…

I’ve always liked the way some castles, pertched on a hill or mountain top, seem to grow directly out of bare rock. One of the finest examples is certainly Riegersburg, a mostly early modern castle in Styria, in southern Austria. Can you spot it in the photo below?

Admittedly, it’s not that hard to spot, but seen from a distance in the haze of a hot summer’s day it really becomes hard to tell where the rock ends and where the castle walls begin.

Ok, that’s it for today, I’m afraid I have to run now because I’m off to England in a couple of hours. I’ll be spending next week at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds, and I’ll be back with conference reports after that. So, see you in a bit…

Leeeeeeds! I shall see you there, mayhap.

    • Yes, from your latest posts I figured you might be there. We definitely should meet :-) So, shall we just hope to bump into each other somehow or shall we make some kind of appointment? I’m not sure if I’ll have e-mail access at the congress, but I can mail you my phone number so you can contact me if you like…
